The Ask

Design a set of web banners for BLK/OPL, a beauty brand specializing in makeup and skincare for people with deeper skin tones. The banners needed to align with the brand’s identity while showcasing product offerings in a clean, modern format.

Maintain the energy and inclusivity of the BLK/OPL brand. Demonstrate creativity, clarity, and storytelling without relying on bold color.

BLK/OPL is a black-owned makeup company that formulates its product for deep skin tones. Its current brand identity uses minimal color, emphasizing high contrast between black and white, with minimal pops of color. I wanted to adhere to its current branding, while also experimenting with typography and photography to express the brand’s playfulness, and dedication to its consumers.

I designed five, industry standard web designs to promote a hypothetical sale of its powder foundation products (call to action). I utilized a black-and-white palette that allowed the typography and photography to take the lead. The pairing of a soft script with a clean sans serif typeface helped strike a balance between approachability and sophistication—mirroring the brand’s confident, inclusive tone. While the visual approach is minimal, the final designs remain impactful and cohesive, reflecting a thoughtful understanding of brand identity and a flexible design sensibility.
